From Publishers Weekly
In a memoir that powerfully discredits the stereotype that spousal battering is limited to a particular economic or social class and is drug- or alcohol-related, Weldon, a successful journalist, also belies the notion that someone who has had a happy childhood cannot be brutalized. Weldon's unnamed husband grew up, as did she, in an Irish-Catholic middle-class environment. He became an attractive, charming and well-paid Chicago attorney, a catch who elicited the envy of Weldon's female friends. In part because the marriage looked so good from the outside, and because she loved her husband and did not want to deprive her three sons of their father, Weldon could not accept that he would not stop beating her, despite years of joint counseling and his eloquent apologies. She finally broke her silence nine years into their marriage by screaming aloud one night when her husband attacked her at her in-laws' house. Her account of how she obtained an emergency order of protection, sought therapy for her sons and underwent the expensive and lengthy process of obtaining a divorce conveys how difficult it is for a woman to leave an abusive relationship, even when she has a supportive family and significant economic resources. Unable to truly forgive her ex-husband for his abuse and the legal battles that he subsequently instigated, Weldon has finally forgiven herself for staying in a terrible marriage. This gripping personal story will be helpful to anyone who wishes to understand domestic abuse; Weldon's most important message to battered women is to bring the violence out of the closet. (Oct.) From Library Journal
Chicago Tribune reporter Weldon (journalism, Northwestern Univ.) skillfully retells an old story about living with and surviving a physically abusive husband. Her tale shatters stereotypes about domestic violence, showing, for instance, that it permeates all classes and educational levels. Likewise, by exploring her happy memories as the child of loving, nurturing parents, she challenges the assumption that battered women seek the battering relationships they knew in their childhood. Weldon begins each chapter with a love letter from her husband that is deeply paradoxical to the abuse she subsequently reveals. Then, in finely honed prose, she takes readers from the early days of their romance to shortly before their separation. Uplifting and self-affirming, this is recommended for all public libraries.APaula N. Arnold, Boston Coll. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who's trying to "fix" a relationship that doesn't feel right. We all go through our rough patches, but Weldon, a successful writer, public speaker and professor at Northwestern University, describes in perfectly clear language how she missed the signs of her husband's abuse and -- ultimately -- found the strength to leave him. Her writing is clear, honest and balanced, and her examination of her situation is both heartbreaking and inspiring. My mother was married to an eerily similar type: The handsome lawyer who charmed the world and wrote long, romantic letters...and even married a girl from River Forest, Illinois. Coincidence? Who knows. What's certain is the writer's strength in leaving such a terrifying and complicated individual; I witnessed my mother do the exact same thing and will be forever grateful. It takes an exceptionally brave woman to stand up to her abuser and an exceptionally strong writer to describe how it's done.
An important book about coming out of the trance of domestic abuse.
I was happy to find this book available. It was the perfect price and it arrived in record speed! Very quick and just as I had hoped.. thanks!
had to purchase this book for a class and really enjoyed reading it and will read it again. love it
Great book
While reading this book, I not only saw my sister but also myself. I would recommend this book to women who even think they might be in an abusive relationship. It doesn't have to be a physical beating. It can also be mental which is almost as bad. I gave the book to my sister. I hope she sees herself.
This memoir dives deep into the author's thoughts, weaving past and present through letters and flashbacks along the way. What is lacking, after the initial chapters, is adequate narrative of actual events. After reading this book, I know what the author feels but not who she is. The switch between past and present gets confusing, and the introspection wears thin toward the middle of the book. I wish Michelle had described more vividly some of the incidents she brushes over, the black eye in Dallas, the bite on the arm. The book has heart but lacks soul.
This book was ok. The author talked about her abuse and how she stayed with the abuser, husband for some time before she actually left him for good. However, the book was kind of redundant and she repeated the same thing over and over. I was waiting for the book to develop over each chapter but each chapter seemed to just repeat what she had already said. Maybe, it was just me, but it was not all that good to me.
