Her all women ensemble, Barbara Duffy & Company has performed at The Duke Theatre on 42nd, NYC, the Joyce Theater, NYC, Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, NYC, the University of Richmond, the Tanz Haus Theatre in Dusseldorf, Germany, Jacob’s Pillow and with Tony Waag’s Tap City On Tour. Barbara has received the “Rhythm World Award†for preserving and passing on the legacy of Leon Collins, the American Tap Dance Foundation’s prestigious “Hoofer Awardâ€, and the National Tap Day Committee’s “FloBert Awardâ€.  She holds a BA in Performing Arts. A highly sought after teacher, Barbara has taught at numerous workshops and festivals in 20 countries. Having had the privilege of studying rhythm tap from Barbara Duffy, I am thrilled she has written this book—a veritable “treasure chest†of ways to explore improvisation. Improvisation is often avoided by teachers and students because, at first glance, it seems so daunting and confusing. Barbara’s manual breaks down the process into concise and clear exercises, infused with her sense of humor and extensive experience. I read this book in two sittings and I will probably return to it for years, as I "get" some of the concepts and want to use suggested exercises. The author really makes the point that tap improvisation is about the music! not how you look, or even about the steps (for us nonprofessionals). I also enjoyed hearing ideas from other current tap greats.
This book is a must for all tap dancers. So much to learn in improving and this book will teach you the way to greatness with improving. I've read it twice and will go back to go through it again and again. Then, I will be able to improv with no trouble. I can't wait for that moment... Thank you Barbara!
Definitely a book every tap dancer should have and will refer to their whole life. Great for dancers and teachers! Barbara Duffy is one of the greatest teachers out there and has dedicated decades to helping guide students with bettering themselves with improvisation. And a fun, interactive read!
