RADM Ellsberg writes a colorful account of his involvement in the creation of the artificial harbors which were constructed off the Allied beachheads in Normandy. Ellsberg, then a senior captain in the U.S. Navy, was tasked to assist the British in floating, towing, and assembling a series of concrete cassions (known as Mulberries) into a an offshore breakwater which could accommodate allied ships bringing supplies and troops to the beach head following the invasion, until the nearby French port of Cherbourg could be like liberated from the Germans and placed in service for this purpose. The concept was brilliant and eventually exceeded all expectations but was frought with technical difficulties which defied solutions because of interservice and interallied rivalries which almost thwarted the planned operation before it could unfold.Built by the Royal Engineers, the Mulberries were constructed in ports all over Great Britain and towed to a quiet beach in southern England and sunk in place until needed for the invasion. (ironically, the Royal Navy was not involved in the planning for this operation.) By the time Ellsberg (an experienced marine salvage officer) became involved, only weeks before D-day, no one had even tried to see if the sunken cassions could be refloated and the method chosen by the British to do this was based on a misunderstanding on the technology needed to accomplish this task. Pride, ignorance, and fear prevented the various stakeholders from admitting there was a problem and then trying to work together to solve the problem at hand. It actually required an interesting source to break the impasse. Moreover, past experience in rehabilitating harbor facilities sabotaged by the Germans in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy; gave Allied planners a false sense of optimism regarding the speed at which Cherbourg would become available to the Allies following the landings in Normandy. This contributed to the sense of the military commanders that the Mulberry plan was cute but not really all that important.Ellsberg tells this tale with a keen sense of humor and at times biting sarcasm. Unfortunately, he spends an inordinate amount of time describing the subsequent landing by US forces on Omaha beach. While his story is true, it is somewhat repetitive, and makes him appear to be omniscient in describing emotional responses of the troops as they landed on poorly prepared beaches due to the atrocious weather and poorly executed preinvasion bombing plans. This interspersed with his assessment of the psychological effect of German propaganda on the troops is tiresome. Much better, more authoritative descriptions of the landings are found in other histories. However, as a record of the Mulberry operation, RADM Ellsberg provides an excellent insight into the need for this operation and the ground breaking technology which eventually made this operation an outstanding success.

First of all; No! The reason Rommel was given the choice between a court-martial and suicide wasn’t because he didn’t follow orders during the landings at Normandy. He was somehow involved in the plot against Hitler and thus given the option of committing suicide in order to keep his “honor” (The explanation being that he died from his wounds)Apart from this little "glitch" this is a very interesting book and I'm looking forward to read it through. In the beginning I wasn't quite sure what the book was about, and if english isn't your native language you may experiece some dificulties understanding some of the "fancy" words. But as you get furter into the book it gives a splendid account of the two Mulberrie harbors. An incredible undertaking that is, unfortunately, pretty much lost in obscurity over the years.

I am a combat veteran with over 22 years in the Marines. I know how important supply and logistics are to the survival and success of a combat unit. The ingenious equipment used in the Normandy Invasion was remarkable. The entire success or failure rested on the Mulberries. This book gives an excellent account of the super human effort and dedication of Allied fighters and their Herculean effort to keep the troops supplied. I recommend anyone that thinks wars are won only by the front line fighter to read this book. EXCELLENT!

It is rare that I give 5 Stars to a book, but this is the best explanation of the Overlord plan and what happened after the first bullet was fired. Of course, it all went to hell and this gives outstanding details of how extrordinary individuals took control and won the battle for France. It really fills in gaps that were not included in great books like The longest Day and Churchills memoirs and other books about D-Day.

A genius transportable seaport that the Allies created to assist in the invasion of Europe. It survived a number of setbacks but WORKED!

The Mulberry project was well reported early on as the means to land materiel in support of the continued massive landing in Normandy. What was not so well reported was the massive effort in producing, staging and transporting the huge concrete structures which comprised Mulberry. The storm destroying the offloading facilities is discussed in detail for the first time in this account. The account of the repair and recovery of the facilities is the first I have ever seen. Job well done. The subtle self-aggrandizement by the author can well be forgiven.

After reading about the construction of the Mulberries and the men in command of placing them at the Normandy beach and how it ultimately was the single most important factor in supplying the Allied armies with all the vital supplies needed to win the battles in France, Belgian and Germany , I came away with another totally new and stunning realization how it was so important to victory of WW 2 .Seemingly , this deciding fact was lost in most stories of the War history , so glad to find and read this book !

Illustrated with original WW2 photographs, this annotated edition of Edward Ellsberg's The Far Shore is his first-hand account of the Allied D-Day landings in France. Himself a principal player in the June 1944 invasion, Ellsberg brings to life the massive preparations prior to the launch of the history's most storied armadas. The second half of Ellsberg's book is his real-time account of D Day'a bloody landings. Any lover of history will want to own this riveting account. I did.
