Review

Praise for the InCryptid series:"The only thing more fun than an October Daye book is an InCryptid book. Swift narrative, charm, great world-building...all the McGuire trademarks." —Charlaine Harris, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of the Sookie Stackhouse series"[Half-Off Ragnarok] is kind of like taking a tour through a very deadly theme park made up of alternating parts awesome and terrifying. Come to think of it, that sums up this series quite nicely.... This book effectively acts as a jumping-on point to those just coming in." —Tor.com "Half-Off Ragnarok is my favorite book in the InCryptid series thus far.... If urban fantasy, intriguing animals, and fast-paced adventure is your thing, you’re going to love Half-Off Ragnarok. Highly recommended." —Jennifer Brozek"McGuire creates a sense of wonder and playfulness with her love for mythology and folklore.... Her enthusiastic and fast-paced style makes this an entertaining page-turner." —Publishers Weekly"McGuire’s InCryptid series is one of the most reliably imaginative and well-told sci-fi series to be found.... McGuire’s heroine is a brave, resourceful and sarcastic delight, and her intrepid comrades are just the kind of supportive and snarky sidekicks she needs." —RT Reviews"While chock-full of quality worldbuilding, realistic characters, and a double helping of sass, at its core, Half-Off Ragnarok is a book about judging others according to stereotypes, how nurture can overcome nature, and the importance of family." —Ranting Dragon"The InCryptid series continues to be storytelling at its best. Tricks for Free sends us on a rollercoaster of emotions and thrills with its engaging plot and ever-expanding and fascinating world." —All Things Urban Fantasy

As seems perpetually the case with McGuire's work, this book was a fun horror-in-the-woods romp with a side of Cryptids, while simultaneously ensuring that her characters show the kind of diversity the "real world" actually holds.Sidebar: One of the things I love best about McGuire's writing is that her characters run the FULL gamut of representation. She writes racially-, sexually-, *biologically*-, and gender-diverse characters into her books in a way that never feels like tokenism, and seldom has anything to do with the plot - unless she's calling out discriminations for the garbage that they are, and showing, through her excellent characterizations, the kind of pain and damage inflicted on people through hate and fear.Antimony's latest contretemps with the Crossroads was fun, intense at times, and followed gleefully the northeastern/new englander-style horror-in-the-woods roadmaps, while still continuing McGuire's worldbuilding from both the InCryptid series and the Ghost Roads books. If there was any weak point to this at all, I think it was the almost sidebar-nature appearance of a member of "The Covenant", which in previous books has been cause for all the conflict & horror to descend at mere mention. Here, however, in the face of the Crossroads, the Covenant seems heavily diminished as a horrific entity. All in all, as is always the case, fully worth the pre-order and will read again. :)

The cornfields were a slow start, the rest of the book is a slam dunk for me, exceeding my expectations.Antimony Price is in way over her head. She is being hunted by a cult that can track her anywhere, and she has made a bad deal with a supernatural force that is about to come due. The one thing that she’s got going for her is her friends, and wow does she have some great friends. I really didn’t like Antimony much when she was introduced many books ago. However she has grown on me, or possibly just grown up. Here she puts it all on the line for her family, both biological and chosen. And you can’t help loving her for that.

Another great installment. I've really come to like Antimony Price over the course of these last three books, and of course Sam as well. Seanan's world-building is phenomenal, but the way she's build the Price family tree is equally as impressive. The pacing of this one is spot-on as well: fast enough, with enough twists, to keep things interesting, slow enough to have Annie's thoughts about her family tree and relationships feel like they're just tangential info-dumps.And the extra novella was a fun, if at times heart-wrenching, read as well.

What a satisfying ending (for now) of the trials of Annie Price! I was at a point where I really needed something fun to read. I can’t think of any series that’s more fun to read than the InCryptid books. Great stories. Great characters, some deliciously not human. Great humor. If you’re reading the series already, you definitely won’t be disappointed in this book. But you already knew that. If you’re not reading the series you’re missing a lot of fun.

As always, this was a very well written tale, nice twists & turns in the plotting. The first few pages take a little bit of necessary "set-up" time - esp for those new to the series. After that, things go very nicely - reader interest is assured.I love this series - esp for the great imagination of the author" - her ability to create interesting characters, - great plotting - and her ability to make the unusual so very possible. My only regret, is that the mice are not in this story (necessary, as explained in the previous story of "Annie") - but I'm sure they'll be back as the series continues.

The adventurous Price family remains, as always, in the bizarre spectrum of life in general. Reading one of their quests requires compiling so many improbable and sometimes contradictory into single sentences that, after awhile, it seems commonplace. This universe is wildly imaginative and fun to immerse yourself in. Annie develops by leaps and bounds over the course of her time in the limelight. I look forward with great anticipation to the next book to see what the family gets up to next.

Loved it! This was the best Antimony book so far. She's growing up without losing her snark...I was slightly disappointed to find a preview instead of more book at the end, but that's publishers for you. Anyway I really liked the crossroads issue and how it was solved.

While I will be sad to lose Antimony as the narrator I am super excited for Sarah books. This one was a great ending and I really didn't expect it to go the way it did. No spoilers from me, except to say I want a road trip novella please.Ok mild spoiler for the story at the endI want a story about how the nice got email. Pretty please. Do they have a smart phone? A laptop? I have so many questions
