About the Author
Josh Adell recently wrote Campbell Hall School’s summer 2015 production of Camphobia. His play Promenade is published in the THREE NEW PLAYS FOR YOUNG ACTORS Anthology and performed around the world. He also produced and directed the film documentary, Finding Bryon, which won the Audience Award at the 2008 Dances with Films Festival. He has performed as an actor on stage, film and TV in NY and Los Angeles, and has served as the high school drama teacher at Campbell Hall High School since 2001, where he has directed over 30 productions. He also served as Performing Arts Department Chair from 2003 to 2007. He currently is a Senior Mentor Faculty Advisor. He is currently developing The Foxhole Circuit, a play.

The author bravely and beautifully tackles a difficult subject. A subject that most people don't want to think about and are ill-equipped to handle. The characters are real and so well written. There is a lot of mystery surrounding mental illness and it's a problem that makes people so uncomfortable, they sometimes sweep it under the rug. This play spotlights a need for open, honest discussion about this very real and prevalent illness. Everyone should have access to tools that might help to begin healing and hopefully prevent many of these tragedies. I highly recommend reading this play.
Mesmerizing, provocative, and thoroughly engaging- I loved watching this play performed live at the premier as well as reading it a second time. It deals with some very difficult and timely issues facing families with children of all ages and has universal appeal.
This is an excellently written, painfully beautiful and poignant piece of artwork. Josh Adell sheds light on the complexities and cruel reality of mental illness among teenagers in our country today. I am personally so grateful he is sharing this with all of us. An important and excellent play
LOVED IT! It's not often that I am this impressed with a new play. The Mental State will one day be a modern day classic.
Wonderfully written and sadly poignant. Would absolutely love to see this in production as the writer does an amazing job of portraying well-developed characters in, what is now, an all-too-real storyline.
Contemporary and important/vital story for today. Highly recommended.
Amazing play!
The Mental State is impressive. It deals with heavy subject matter, but never comes off as preachy, one-sided, or political. This is because, while the subject material is difficult and dense, Josh Adell never loses sight of his characters. They are not vehicles for the message. Rather, the message comes from the empathetically written characters and the real situations they stumble into. For as deep as the piece is, there is levity and hope throughout, making it feel all the more real. The Mental State challenges its performers and audience... specifically, it challenges them to think - which is the highest praise one can give to any piece of art.
