Review
Early-childhood educator Leon makes the Passover story and Seder ceremony an enjoyable experience for preschool children and young families in this succinct retelling of the Jews flight for freedom from slavery. Clear explanations for each ceremonial food and ritual appear in a lively, color-coded text with dual Hebrew and transliterated equivalents, encouraging role-playing at the table; characters from the villainous Pharaoh, to the Prophet Elijah, Miriam and Moses, to all ten plagues are represented. Easy-to-learn, catchy, rhythmic songs that capture traditional Hebrew prayers combine with original English folksongs, further adding to the playfulness. --Kirkus Reviews

My wife found this book on-line and thought it looked quite nice. I found it on Amazon and ordered a copy. We both loved it (hence the five stars). The book seemed perfectly suited to young children (our grandson is 3 1/2). We proudly took it with us when we visited our daughter and son-in-law, planning to leave it with them. Our daughter looked it over and gave it back to us. She felt that the "bad" parts of the Exodus story were still too harsh.Since I'm the one writing this review, I'm going with the "I love it" rating that my wife and I share. We are keeping the book and will use selected parts of it, showing respect for our daughter's concerns, next Passover (when our grandson will be 4 1/2).My advice:To parents: Use the "Look Inside" feature on Amazon and make sure you're comfortable with the telling of the Exodus story. I found it very mild and had no problems with it what-so-ever.To grandparents: Show it to your sons/daughters on-line or have them surf over to Amazon themselves. Parents, after all, should have the final say about what their young children read, or have read to them.As a parent (two daughters) and a grandparent (one grandson), I recommend it, with the above caveat.
This has to be one of the best Haggadahs for kids around. While this is NOT strictly a "family" Haggadah (as the older kids and adults would find this completely too juvenile, it is great for a setting like school or daycare where the entire audience are kids under 10. The songs are fantastic but there is no music for them included. While a CD purchase is offered, I'd much rather have the chords so we can play it ourselves...stopping and restarting to help learn the music. I managed to find a couple of the song's sheet music on the web, but couldn't find most of them. With music included, it wold be rated a 5!
For the last few years, I had been telling myself that I needed to find a Haggadah for our family Seders which now includes small children. I always got around to it too late and was stuck with our old Haggadah. This year, I finally got my act together and I ordered a bunch of Haggadahs from Amazon to compare and contrast. I ended up keeping only this one and I was really happy with it. I also looked at Richard Codor's Joyous Haggadah:A Children and Family Cartoon Haggadah for Passover Seder (found the comic strip illustrations too distracting from the story), and A Family Haggadah I and II by Shoshana Silberman (too dry for me and too old for my kids)The best part of this Haggadah is the accompanying music. Not all copies are sent with a CD so be careful when you order that you are getting the CD (the description mentions the CD so I assumed that my copy would have a CD but it did not. The supplier refunded my money and let me keep my copy). You can order the CD from the author of the book.It doesn't have everything (only one cup of wine, the four children are missing) but it had enough of what I felt made the Seder meaningful to the adults and to the small children. All together there were my children, (2 1/2 and 5) and my nieces (2 1/2 and almost 6) They enjoyed the colorful pages and the songs. If you can listen to the CD with your kids several times before the Seder it is even better. The tunes are easy to listen to and catchy. My kids picked up on the words very quickly. We will definitely use this Haggadah for years to come until the kids are ready for more.
The book is beautifully illustrated and written HOWEVER, the buyer must be aware that the current edition being sold DOES NOT INCLUDE THE CD. I was disappointed to get the book without the CD, especially after reading the terrific reviews by the other customers. In all fairness, however, I think the book is fairly priced, even without the CD. I noticed a competitor of Amazon that sells the book with the CD charges considerably more.
Okay, since we got the haggadah and purchased the music separately on the web site, my 4 year old has listened to the music. The music is great. The hagaddah is fair, in that it skips over many things but also good in that it treats them in kid appropriate ways. It is still too long for kids, but the story is good. I'd recommend it as we are fairly happy with it this year.
It's a really good seder manual. I'd have prefered if it had mentioned and dramatized each of the 10 plagues, rather than avoiding them. That could open to a discussion around the table of whether each was a just punishment. The tenth plague brings up ethical issues that children over the age of seven or eight can begin to ponder and debate. But that's just my approach.
This was a great haggadah for a seder with our two and a half year old grandson. While there are downloads available for the songs, we already knew the tunes to most of them from our children's early seders. We were able to hit the 'highlights' of the seder and eat while still keeping the toddler's attention!
I found the Haggadah to be perfect for a 5 year old. We had a small sedar and every adult commented on how clear the story was. Without the extra rabbis commentary it made the story easy to follow! I would highly recommend!
