Review

"Instead of merely cataloguing, the late Weingartner offers a privileged 'behind the scenes' peak into the intention, production, and reception of the Thorne Collection. . . . The delightful book will appeal to a wide range of readers. It is both a glossy catalogue of images and a robust historical account of American skills and interpretations of European design, personified by Mrs. Thorne. Highly recommended."—L. Living so close, we have visited the Art Institute of Chicago a bunch of times and while I sometimes send my husband and son off to the nearby Field Museum of Natural History, I stay behind and see my exhibits--particularly the miniature rooms. The last time I was there, there were almost no other people so I got to cruise around at my own pace and really study the rooms from many angles. I just inhaled their beauty. The front cover of the book shows one of the best rooms. The back cover is amazing: you zoom back to reality when you see the real life-size rose--as long as the oriental carpet--lying on the floor! Happily, in person, you don't have such a jarring experience. In going from room to room, if you half-close your eyes in between, you really get a sense that these rooms are life-like portrayals and you're a giant. The scale of all the rooms but the English Cathedral is 1:12 inches, the classic ratio for doll houses and miniatures. The gothic cathedral is 3/4" to 12" scale probably to keep it proportionately smaller--being medieval, there is more lofty open space than substance and you're even more impressed with its enormity. One secret to success you may not realize is that there are no doll figures. You see realistic portraits, but if there were figures in the rooms, it would be all about how realistic they are instead of the surrounding room. The first 18 pages lovingly describe Mrs. Thorne's life and the pain-staking lengths she took to create these masterpieces. The first pictured rooms are the 31 European Rooms (the last two being Chinese and Japanese). The rooms range in date from the 13th century English cathedral to the 1930's. {I spend so much time admiring and discussing the Gothic cathedral and Elizabethan Great Hall because my husband is from England. Carlisle in the far northwest has an intact castle and working cathedral both of which were started to be built in the 11th century. We've paraded through Windsor Castle, St. Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, and York Minster. For comparison to the Thorne rooms, we've also admired Queen Mary's Dolls' House in Windsor Castle: with running water and electricity it may be a little more realistic...but they're very comparable. Please see: Queen Mary's Dolls' House: Official Souvenir Guide (Souvenir Guides),Queen Mary's Dolls' House: Official Guidebook, and The Queen's Dolls' House: A Dollhouse Made for Queen MaryThe second section of rooms is the American Rooms, 37, the vast majority--26--being from 18th century colonial New England. The only room not being of the South or California is the "Middletown" parlor probably based on Mrs. Thorne's Indiana childhood home. The only fault I have with the rooms themselves is what designer Christopher Lowell describes as the "bowling alley" effect...all furniture is jacked up against the walls with only a timid dining table or settee stepping foot into the middle. Only for a ball would you have found this in real life. Think of any period movie you've seen (or Downton Abby!). This allows you to see each piece of furniture better but it actually disrupts being able to appreciate the walls. The rooms look a little more spare and cold. A real sitting room, lounge or bedroom has furniture more accessible in the middle of a room. The only fault I have with this gorgeous book itself is the angle at which it is photographed. If you study the cover photo carefully, you'll see that the back wall is always in the middle of the picture, with as much floor as ceiling shown. Only in the close-ups and the one French room where the ceiling is pronounced is the view from a person who's no more than 6' tall and not 11' feet tall. When I view the rooms, I bend down to see them more straight-on: this heightens the realism of the rooms for me.These minor considerations aside, these rooms are glorious and the book well-worth reading. You'll want to make a beeline to the Art Institute (which actually has a lot more lovely exhibitions too) whenever you're in our neck of the woods.

The details in the book are a perfect accompaniment to a visit to the actual Thorne room in Chicago. And while I think you have to make that trip to truly appreciate the scale and detail, the photos in the book are well done and as close as you'll otherwise get (VR version Chicago Art Museum?). I walked through Thorne room fully expecting to find these to be silly doll houses and that turned out to be further than the truth. Very impressive stuff. If you enjoy miniatures, probably a must have. If you just appreciate period architecture and detail it's still a must. And if you enjoy Wes Anderson movies like Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Royal Tenenbaums you'll see the inspiration these rooms gave those films (in fact, there's a quote from Wes on the wall in the gallery).

This is an amazing collection, and of the two photo books on the Thorne Rooms this is the most reasonably priced. I have a number of books on miniatures and dollhouses, and this is a great addition to my collection. BTW, if you are in Chicago, there are two places to view exquisite miniatures - the realism of the Thorne Rooms at the Art Institute, and the fantasy castle known as Colleen Moore's Dollhouse at the Museum of Science & Industry. Both are a visual treat!

This book is beautiful. It's the perfect gift for the miniature/dollhouse lover in your life. Chock full of fascinating descriptions of how these rooms were made, the staff Ms. Thorne used to help her build these things out, and by the end of it, had me wanting to go cut up some balsa wood and make something tiny... the rooms cover so many areas of history. I really loved the 1930s penthouse. The photographs are stunning and the book is full of them. Get this book!! You will not be sorry.

Mrs. Thorn must have been a real perfectionist! She collected, decorated, and installed exacting rooms. Each of her rooms had the most lovely miniature examples of period furniture. She used the universal miniature rule of one inch to one foot. Visiting the Art Institute if Chicago and viewing this exhibit should be on every person's list of the most important things to see and do during one's lifetime. If you see this wonderful exhibit you will want this book for your personal library. It is a must for anyone who is into collecting or studying 'period' furniture. Bravo to Amazon for having this lovely and so so informative book in their inventory!

If you've ever visited the Art Institute and wished that you could spend more time enjoying the Thorne Rooms, this book is a way for you to visit them as often as you would like."Miniature Rooms" begins with a brief history of Mrs. Thorne and how the rooms came to be. The rest of the book is a complete catalog of the Rooms, divided into two sections - the European rooms and the American rooms. Every room is beautifully photographed from at least two angles, using the existing lighting in the rooms so that each has the same realistic quality enjoyed in the Institute. Along with each photograph is a description of the room and its furnishings. I would recommend "Miniature Rooms" to anyone who enjoys the Art of Miniatures.

Great book with wonderful photos and background, but even better is seeing the rooms at the museaum.

Excellent exhibit excellent book

I look at this book over and over, getting ideas for my own houses. But it is way beyond my houses - breathtakingly beautiful rooms. Every dollhouse person should have a copy of this book - it sets a very high standard for us to reach.
