About the Author
Tom Moser grew up in Chicago, learning to work with his hands from his father. While in high school, Tom met Mary Wilson, whom he married in 1957. During the early years of their marriage, Tom and Mary supplemented their income by purchasing old furniture, refinishing it in their home workshop, and reselling it. He returned to school earning a bachelor’s of science degree in Speech Education. After graduation, he began teaching English in High School, and eventually earned both his master’s degree and doctorate in Speech Communications, moving on to teach at state colleges in Michigan and New York.In 1972, Tom left his tenured professorship to turn his woodworking hobby into a career. In April 1973, Tom and Mary launched Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers. What began as an intense exploration of craftsmanship has evolved into a business that employs more than 125 people, and has residential, professional and academic customers worldwide. Tom remains active in the business, along with three of his four sons.

Generic and fairly limited plans for furniture. In the end, I couldn’t use any of the drawings for my Shaker dining table.
Although the bulk of the book is intended for woodworkers, the first chapter is a great introduction to Shaker design and its continuing influence, with insightful comments, a worthwhile read for anyone interested in wood furniture design.
This is a valuable book for those interested in making Shaker furniture. Moser's eye and aesthetic are well known and this book is both an example of some of his pieces (with basic shop drawings but without construction steps) and his take on woodworking, wood, and tools, along with some intriguing information on how his shop works. It makes for a really interesting read.The book is not without its problems. Moser's writing is clear and enjoyable but the proofreading leaves something to be desired. None of the errors interfere with Moser's text but one expects copy editors to know how to spell and the proper use/non-use of the possessive apostrophe.One other observation: unlike similar books, the paper in this book has a non-gloss matte finish (which I really like); perhaps as a consequence, the paper is really thin -- durable but thin. It took some time to wrap my head around this.If you enjoy the aesthetics of Shaker furniture and want to hear from a master woodworker, this will be a valuable addition to your collection.
