Vick makes excellent choices of words and style, capturing readers' interest early on and compelling them to experience Tag's fears, humiliations, and longings. They will join him in his growing desire to save the ruins of the ancient ones from neglect, destruction, and pot-hunting thieves as he makes six jumps forward in time, meeting and influencing people, both fictional and historical, along the way. Tag's yearning to do what must be done and his frustration at taking on enormous responsibilities in the face of many setbacks ring true. This is the 2nd in a trilogy that begins with Walker in Time and ends with Walker's Journey Home. Set in Walnut Canyon, AZ, where I had just toured through cliff dwellings of the Sinagua people, it was especially fascinating to get a first hand glimpse of how the ancient peoples lived there, and perhaps what became of them. The books are aimed at Young Adult level, roughly 12-17, but are suitable for all ages. Two boys -- one Hopi, one pale -- travel in back in book one. In this volume, Tag -- the white boy -- has to go back to the present (1994), which is no easy task. It doesn't get much more interesting than Hopi time travel!
This was a very interesting set of books to read. I was living in Arizona at the time and was able to visualize the areas mentioned in the book and understand the hardships of life in the historical and present day sections of the books.
Excellent book. I have all three books in the series and love them.
This sequel easily got 4 stars. In the beginning Tag the main character travels through timefrom 1250 to a lot of different times. All through that time he protected the canyon he lived in with his best friend from grave robbers. In the end he finds his dad and the canyon is protected. I thought that the author characterizied Tag and the people he met well. It is very suspenseful and made me read on. This is a very good book to read if you like the Indian culture or action books.
I read this series to my fourth and fifth graders back when they first came out. I enjoyed reading them all over again.
