Excerpt Padraig landed on a branch and popped a bug into his mouth. He grinned as he chewed. The bug was crunchy on the outside and squishy on the inside, and it tasted like nuts and sweet oranges. The treat was yummy, but he still had room in his tummy for one more crunchy, squishy, nutty bug. He looked through the leaves. No flying bugs. He looked on the branches. No crawling bugs. He flew to the ground to look for creeping bugs. Instead he founda grumpy-faced turtle. Padraig forgot his rumbling tummy. “What’s wrong?” he asked. “I’m turned around,” the turtle whispered. “You’re not turned around. You’re looking right at me.” The turtle gave an exasperated sigh. “‘Turned around’means lost. I’ve lost my house.” “Oh.” Padraig sat down with his wings folded and his tailcurled in a neat circle. “What’s your name?” he asked. Roger,” said the turtle. “Pleased to meet you, Roger,” he said. “My name is Padraig.” Roger nodded. “Nice to meet you.” “How did you lose your house?” asked Padraig. “I was playing pirates,” Roger explained.“My ship hit a squall and was blown offcourse. Now I’m stuck on a deserted island.Which is fine, but I’m getting hungry.” “I see,” said Padraig. “These waters canbe dangerous.” “Indeed.” Roger nodded. “What does your house look like?” “Brown like my shell,” said Roger. “Okay. Wait here. I’ll go scout.”

Roger is a turtle who loves to imagine that he's a pirate (which is a common playtime theme with my son as well). He has all sorts of adventures in his little fantasy land, but on this particular day Roger realizes that he is lost. He's feeling a little nervous when who should show up but a small, bug-eating dragon named Padraig.Padraig - kind, self-sacrificing dragon that he is - offers to help Roger find his house since he can fly up high and therefore cover ground (sky?) more quickly. Rogers' descriptions of home take some figuring out. His house looks brown, sounds like singing, smells like baking, feels like sand, and tastes like strawberries. Through much trial and error - and great patience and compassion - they finally find Rogers home. Once there, they are treated to a plateful of Chocolate Chip Snappers (which every pirate needs after a day of sailing the High Seas). This book had so many wonderful teaching aspects that it's hard to know where to begin... You have character traits - patience, compassion, self-sacrifice, kindness, respect. You have the five senses - look, sound, smell, feel, taste. You could also use it to teach your child how they would describe their home to a stranger if they were lost, which is something they may not think about. The illustrations are lovely. The characters look warm, friendly and happy. You don't see many dragons that look sweet! The pictures are somewhat fairy-tale like and the colors are rich, warm and comfortable. They were a perfect reflection of the sweet story. My son loves this story. We've read it at least a dozen times over the last few weeks and he's dying to make the Chocolate Chip Snappers recipe in the back of the book (though we'll have to do some tweaking since it's obviously not a gluten free recipe). He also saw me looking at the next book by Donita K. Paul and Evangeline Denmark - 'The Dragon and the Turtle Go on Safari' - and is begging me to get it for him.Two thumbs WAY up. Publishers' age recommendation is 4-8 and I'd agree with that. My 3 1/2 year old loves the book, but there are some subtleties that are lost on him so far.
In this colorful story we are introduced to Padraig the dragon and Roger the turtle and an unusual friendship is formed. Poor Roger has been playing and his wild imagination got the better of him and he is lost. Fortunately he comes across Padraig who turns out to be a terrific friend and helper. Padraig patiently and relentlessly helps Roger find his home. In the end he is reward with some delicious Chocolate Chip Snappers and a wonderful new friend.Positives: The kindness and patience Padraig displayed to Roger was great. I also liked the way their friendship was formed - over common interests and differences. The use of the 5 senses also added a nice touch. I was glad to see a mini Bible lesson on friendship at the end of the book with a verse and questions to follow up with for my kids.Negatives: NoneTalking Points: This story made me think of several different Bible passages. Certainly the passages in Proverbs that deal with friendship such as the one the authors use in Proverbs 17:17, but also the story of the Good Samaritan from Luke 10. Padraig helped a complete stranger and what a blessing he received - a new friend! He didn't care that this stranger was a turtle, he was simply willing to help him. Finally, Padraig also exhibited Christ-like behavior found in Philippians 2:3 - "Do nothing from selfishishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves." Padraig did not consider his own hunger, only the need of Roger to find his home. For younger children in particular, you could also talk about the 5 senses used in the story and how God has magnificently created us.Age Level: 3-7 years of age I received a copy of this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing group for this review.
This is a cute children's book. I enjoyed the friendship theme and how the dragon, Padraig, stuck with the turtle, Roger, and continued to help him until he found his way back home. I can see children enjoying this book because of the adventure and sensory input like the crunchy bugs Padraig was eating. The facial expressions the dragon makes are just precious. The fact that the turtle is lost will touch heartstrings, and his friend's effort to help him is quite touching. Because the way the turtle describes his home keeps building in the details, the mystery needing to be solved also builds from a suspense-like drive to find answers. I can easily see a child turning the pages to find out what happens next. The illustrations are beautiful and eye-catching and I can see this book becoming a child's favorite request, like a "read this to me over and over" type story. I would have enjoyed this story for the pictures alone when I was reading a lot of children's books in elementary school. Plus, there are great discussion questions at the end that will inspire talks between parents and their children, Sunday School teachers, and the story include a bible verse. There is a bonus recipe for chocolate chip cookies for moms at the end.(The Wordsmith Journal strives to guide readers to books of personal interest, with the understanding and respect that what appeals to some may not appeal to others.
